SCENE: House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is just wrapping a press conference with House GOP leadership, so Ask a Pol’s Matt Laslo proceeds to walk with him and his security detail and aides to the closest elevator.

Matt Laslo: “Hey, how are you Mr. Emmer?”
Tom Emmer: “How are you?”
ML: “Do you worry about the politics we’re seeing being inserted into the crypto debate over in the Senate?”

TE: “I'm disappointed about that. I've said that. I, you know, and I think these guys understand it. I think they're doing great work over in the Senate, as we — [Reps.] French Hill and Bryan Steils and all our members are doing in the House.”
ML: “Yeah?”
TE: “But it's just a fact of this place — right? — that somebody was going to start leveraging somewhere.”
ML: “Yeah.”
TE: “And I think they're going to be reminded by the community that this is not about Republicans and Democrats. This is just about Americans who want the freedom that this country’s supposed to provide so they can make their decisions on that themselves. And I think it'll be fine.”
ML: “Yeah?”
TE: “I think that's just a, you know, that's just a fact of where we're at right now, and they'll, I think they'll come around. They're doing good work over there, and I think the those that understand the community on both sides of the aisle will come to their senses. It can't be about Republicans Democrats. It's about Americans.”
ML: “Do you have any concerns with the president's family's coins?”

TE: “The Trump family has been incredibly successful long before they ever came to [Washington], and until somebody shows me what is, like, violating the law, no, I'm not concerned. They're very successful. They always have been.”*
TE: “But the idea that the media wants to focus on someone who's been conducting business for decades, out in the open in a transparent way, versus the Biden family that was literally milking this place for their own personal benefit is just bizarre to me.”
Emmer enters elevator with his mini-entourage.
ML: “I like that ‘kiddie paintings.’”
Laslo laughs.
TE: “Yeah?”
ML: “Yeah.”
TE: “They’d embarrass kindergarteners.”
ML: “Right?”
Emmer aide: “Can you remind me your name and outlet?”
ML: “It’s Matt Laslo.”
Aide: “Thank you.”
ML: “Thank you, sir.”
